In England, the Office for Students (OfS) keeps a public register of higher-education providers, including each provider’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) rating. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own funding and quality bodies, and the QAA reviews quality across the UK. The right to use “university” in a title is controlled, and official course data for the whole UK is published on Discover Uni. This site is built on that kind of open, checkable data.
Why international students choose the UK
- Taught in English, so there is no second language to learn before you start.
- Shorter courses. Most bachelor’s degrees take three years outside Scotland, and many master’s degrees take one.
- Clear admissions. UCAS handles undergraduate applications; the main deadline is 31 January.
- A Graduate visa for eligible graduates, whose length changes for applications from 1 January 2027 (see our visa guide).
