Our star rating, explained

The UK has no official government star rating for universities. Quality is assured by other instruments: in England the Office for Students (OfS) keeps a public register of providers and publishes Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) ratings (Gold, Silver, Bronze or Requires improvement), the QAA reviews quality across the UK, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own funding bodies. The right to use “university” in a title is controlled, and Discover Uni publishes official course-level data such as student satisfaction and graduate outcomes. Those are the official sources, and none of them is a star rating.

To make comparison easier, Top Universities in UK shows an editorial 1-to-6 star band. It is not a government score and not a separate judgement: it is simply a readable summary of our published composite score, which is built only from figures someone else published: the institution’s QS World position (as recorded in Wikidata), the breadth of courses it holds in official course data, its international student share and its student-support signals. Full weights are on our ranking methodology page.

The six tiers

TierRatingMeaning
6/6 Outstanding World-leading across reputation, research, resources and outcomes.
5/6 Excellent Very high quality, highly selective institution.
4/6 Very Good Strong, well-established quality.
3/6 Good Sound quality that meets expectations.
2/6 Satisfactory Adequate quality with room to grow.
1/6 Developing Below the level of the institutions above.

What the star rating reflects

  • Reputation, the institution’s QS World position where it has one.
  • Breadth, how many courses it publishes in official data.
  • International share and student support, from published figures.

How we use it

On Top Universities in UK, a university’s star rating appears on its profile as e.g. “Star rating 6/6 ★”. It is derived from the composite score, never an input to it. Ratings are indicative: always confirm a university’s standing on the OfS register and with the university.
