Unlike undergraduate study, there is no single deadline for postgraduate study in the UK. Most universities take applications directly on their own portal, and some use UCAS Postgraduate.

Steps

  1. Find the course page. It lists the entry requirement — usually a good undergraduate degree — and the English language level.
  2. Check the scholarship deadline first. Funding deadlines are often months earlier than the course's own deadline. Popular courses can also fill before they close.
  3. Prepare your documents: transcripts, a CV, a personal statement and references.
  4. Apply and wait for an offer. Offers are often conditional on your final degree result and your English score.
  5. Accept and meet the conditions. Once you have met them, and if you need a visa, the university can issue your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

Research degrees

A PhD or other research degree usually needs a supervisor and a research proposal. Many funded doctoral places are advertised by the university or a doctoral training partnership with their own deadlines — see our scholarships guide.
